Devotion

WHAT IS GOD WAITING FOR?

The people of Judah belonged to the Lord. He had created this nation and called them His own children. Through the prophet Isaiah He was sending the message loud and clear that they had really messed up. They had broken His law and they had violated many promises they had made to Him. In fact, the Lord was about to send the same judgment on them that He sent to destroy Sodom and Gomorrah. Do you remember that story from Sunday School? It was the story when Lot’s wife was turned into a pillar of salt and those two cities were destroyed under God’s judgment.
In this scripture God wants to help His children to think this through. At that time, the nation seemed strong and wealthy. But God had shown Isaiah signs of a very real and present danger. People were using their power to harass the poor. Men went around drunk; women cared more about their clothes than about their neighbors' hunger. Others were just going through the motions in worship and were just putting on a good but empty show of religion. God was not happy with them at all.

God’s patience with us humans always amazes me. In the middle of His intense and stern warning, He invites his children to come to Him and find forgiveness and freedom from their guilt and sin. He is still doing the same thing today with you and me. It reminds me of a similar scripture in 2 Peter 3:9-11. In that scripture, Peter tells about the great and terrible Day of the Lord when everything will be destroyed and God will forever establish His kingdom. But, if you will take a few minutes to read there you will find this amazing statement; "The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. He is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance. But the day of the Lord will come like a thief.”

When things look hopeless to you and you wonder what God is up to while you go through your tough times, don’t ever forget that He is going to make things right in his time. And when He does there will be no doubt left that He is in charge. If you stay humble and trust in Him you will be kept safe.

Devotion

Brian leaned over and whispered, “Jon.” After getting no response he whispered, “Jon, your shirt’s on fire.” That got Jon’s attention—and the attention of everyone else in the crowded living room. Even though the announcement came in the middle of a prayer of thanks for the food we were about to eat, a flurry of activity began. Jon had backed up against a candle and had caught himself on fire. Fortunately we extinguished his shirt and he suffered no injuries. We told the story often over the next few weeks and even hung the shirt with the large hole burned in it on our youth room bulletin board. Now, we’re careful when Jon and an open flame are in the same place!
Wouldn’t it be awesome if the people around us could see that we were on fire? Not physically, of course, but spiritually. Don’t you think it would bring a lot of happiness to God’s heart if we, His people, lived in such a way that all could see us burning with the fire of God inside us? We’re called to be a light. If we are on fire for God we’ll do just that!
